No business fits wallet marketing better than a coffee shop. Visits are frequent, habit-driven, and geographically local; the buy-ten-get-one mechanic is universally understood; and the customer's phone is already in their hand while they wait in line.
The setup that works
The pass: a digital stamp card — your branding, stamp progress front and center, the reward named explicitly ("Free drink at 10"), your barcode for stamping.
The ask: a small QR stand at the register, and a barista line that takes three seconds: "Want our stamp card? Lives in your phone wallet — no app." The customer scans while you make their drink; by handoff they're a pass holder.
The stamping: scan their pass barcode at checkout. The balance updates on their phone in real time — there's a small moment of delight the first time a customer watches it tick up.
The three messages that matter
Coffee loyalty runs on exactly three notifications:
- Almost-there: "2 stamps from your free drink ☕" — sent automatically by progress, this is the visit-driver.
- Reward unlocked: "Your free drink is ready — show this pass." Redemption is the habit-cementing moment; never make it hard.
- The weekly nudge: one offer or update per week, max. "New single-origin this week" keeps the pass alive without burning trust.
Resist sending more. The lock screen is high-trust space, and coffee customers are the most loyal audience you'll ever have — until you spam them.

Why not a punch card or an app?
Paper cards disappear into pockets and washing machines, can't remind anyone of anything, and tell you nothing about your regulars. Apps have the opposite problem: the build cost is absurd for an independent café, and customers won't download them anyway. The wallet pass is the middle path — app-grade capability, paper-grade simplicity.
The morning-rush detail that matters
Speed at the register is everything in a café. The wallet pass flow respects it: the customer's pass is two taps from their lock screen (or surfaces automatically via location relevance when they walk in), and your scan takes a second. Pilot it with your regulars first — they'll forgive any first-week fumbling, and they're the ones who'll fill the card fastest anyway.
A café that converts even a modest slice of its daily customers into pass holders ends up with the most valuable asset in local marketing: a list of provably loyal customers, reachable on their lock screens, for free, forever.
